WHY IS SOCIAL MEDIA SUCH A PROBLEM AND WHAT ARE THE DANGERS?
Social media’s effect on young people has unfortunately, become a worrying problem. But why?... Simply, because it is so addictive. If you are playing a game or scrolling through social media platforms, time passes by quickly! The nature of ‘scrolling’ may seem harmless and you may not realise it initially, however, it can often lead to the development of mental health issues such as loneliness, isolation, and even depression.
There are various dangers of excessively using social media that can have a negative impact, including cyberbullying, viewing inappropriate images or videos and privacy issues. Additionally, young people can develop low self-esteem and self-confidence, and in some cases, consider suicide.
What type of influence do influencers on social media have on young people?
Influencers can have a negative and positive impact on young people. For example, they can shape the way young people see the world yet can create false views on how young people act and in what they should believe. Secondly, influencers often talk about a variety of topics important to young people such as fashion, image, and lifestyle. Lastly, there are positives when using social media, it allows you to connect with others, have access to a wide range of information, sites and platforms and motivate young people by promoting health and wellbeing.
