Cowboy Bebop – Why Spike Spiegel is my favourite character?

Alex Harker • 15 March 2022

Overview

In the anime Cowboy Bebop that aired in 1998, Spike Spiegel is the most iconic character not just in Cowboy Bebop but he is also the most iconic character in all of anime. His Personality is vastly different from any other character and is hard to be compared to, he is lazy, slothful and always lays about, sleeping or watching tv in his spare time, but on a few rare occasions he is seen practicing Jeet Kune Do. Which is his preferred style in martial arts, and he is described to be like flowing water due to him being able to adapt well to different situations. He is also very inpatient and is seen smoking in pretty much every shot and keeps a slouched posture when walking around. A lot of the time he shows very little interest in anything and lacks empathy for others, he is a character that is very troubled by the past and fails to let go of the things he lost.

Appearance

As far as appearance goes, Spike’s style is pretty smart yet also messy and unique from all the other characters. He stands tall at 6’1” with brown eyes and untamed dark greenish hair. He wears a blue leisure suit with a yellow button-up underneath, along with a pair of smart blue dress shoes to match his suit. What sticks out is that his right eye is a fake one which was surgically implanted due to an incident from being in the crime syndicate. You can tell because both eyes are slightly different shades from one another.

Interesting facts

He is very experienced in martial arts and in using firearms. Spike’s weapon of choice is the Jericho 941 pistol and to get around he pilots a spacecraft called the Swordfish II which had been passed down for many years before him, so it’s pretty beat up.

What I find most interesting about him is his mysterious past as a member of a crime syndicate called “The Red Dragon”, we don’t learn much about this until the later episodes of the anime though it’s worth the long build up, out of all the characters I think Spike has the best back story and by the time you’ve learnt about it you feel some sympathy for the character and understand why he feels these emotions. His back story is unlike any other I’ve seen, and is hard to beat.

Finally to wrap things up...

Spike’s character is difficult to hate and really well written. He is funny, laid back and serious when he wants to be and is also quite a lonely and sad character whose stuck on his past and has truly lost a lot of who he was back then. He doesn’t know where he really belongs and wants to feel like he’s living again, as in the anime he states how he wants to find out if he is really alive. Plus, his fake eye really humanizes him, it shows that Spike has flaws and that he isn’t perfect, just like how we ourselves aren’t perfect and have trouble finding out where we belong and who we are. I feel that people who watch the anime can relate to Spike in at least some kind of way from the events he’s had to endure or by his appearance. I personally relate to Spike because I tend to be quite lazy, laid back and slouch a lot, and I also struggle with finding out where I belong and start to feel lost. All in all, this is why Spike Spiegel is my favourite character in all of anime. His character design was way ahead of its time, it brought new ideas to the world of anime itself.
