For my article in lockdown, I wish to do a film review. The film I want to talk about is Alpha (2018). It is about a young caveman, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, who gets separated from his family during a hunt and has to find his way home with the help of a wolf in a journey which will bring about the discovery of man's best friend.
The plot is fairly simple from the sound of it, but it's done in an epic, dark yet heartwarming manner that will captivate people of any age. The performances are pretty good and considering that they are all done with very little dialogue and only in an primitive language it's an impressive feat. Even the performance from the wolf is great which adds to the viewers being really invested between the wolf and the caveman.
The most obvious positive I have to mention about the film is the cinematography. Every single shot is spectacularly gorgeous, spellbinding and beautiful that they all deserve to be hung on walls like classical paintings. Just looking at the film will leave you mesmerised. On the negative side, some may argue, is that the film doesn't have many surprises apart from the big one at the end. I would argue that it's not meant to have surprises as it's just meant to be about the journey and the relationship between the two main characters.
Overall, I think Alpha is a lovely, charming and underrated film that deserves more attention from many film-goers as possible so the general public can truly see it as a great piece of entertainment.
