This delivered everything I hoped. It has great editing in a nonlinear storytelling point of view that I didn’t expect to see. It has great title cards and some of the best shots I’ve ever seen in a comic book film ever. This film delivers on its ‘Game of Thrones’ premise where every character can suddenly die. The actors are brilliantly casted for the characters they are playing. They all feel unique with well-rounded backstories, motivations and personalities to make them stand out and for you to be invested in. The actor that stand’s out the most is Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag. His character has significantly improved from Suicide Squad (2016), as he is the moral compass of this film. Furthermore, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2 gives an incredible performance, with Melchior’s character’s emotions being at the centre of the story. Equally talented is Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, who offers all the laugh out loud moments in the film.
There are some flaws with this film and most notably with the villains. The general militaristic figures are dumb and boring and their plan makes no sense. The main villains of the story feel unique with good concepts to be explored but are left underdeveloped. Moreover, some characters have vague power levels especially with King Shark which makes it unclear if a character can die or not in some scenarios. Meanwhile not all character arcs integrate well in the story as well as it could have but still does a good job of having character arcs. Lastly, I wish the deaths of all the characters were spread throughout the film as the majority are killed at the start, leaving not a lot of tension left in how many more characters can get killed off.
Overall, I had a blast with this film and one of my favourites of the year so far. Even though at times some concepts and character arcs are left underdeveloped and some surprise factor was missing as the trailers gave too much away. The film still had a great story, interesting characters, played by great actors with great bloody violence and dark humour to add to it.
Overall Rating: 4/5
